Milwaukee Active Streets launches for 2021

Milwaukee announced on Friday, June 4 the 2021 launch of its Active Streets program.

The hot weather Friday, June 4 had many people out enjoying the sun, and four Milwaukee neighborhoods will have new programming to help residents enjoy the outdoors all summer.

The city kicked off its Active Streets program Friday – blocking off certain streets to through traffic, giving more room for things like walking and biking.

As the 90-degree sun shined down on 25th Street, brother and sister Jeremiah and Janiyah soaked it all in.

The two will have fewer cars to worry about this year as they zip around the neighborhood. 25th Street from Roosevelt to Capitol was chosen as a location for the Active Streets program.

"It helps residents to see that we’re listening to them, that they’re concerned about the speeding, the reckless driving. The barricades will help to slow the traffic in the area. Kids feel much more comfortable riding their bikes. Residents are walking and biking in the area," said Raymond Monk with Northwest Side Community Development Co. (NWSCDC).

Along with the Active Streets signage comes a grant to the NWSCDC to run programs, like a walking club.

"I’m not afraid to walk. My kids always tell me I shouldn’t be walking alone, but I walk around the block a couple times," long-time resident John Barbee said.

Barbee raised five kids of his own at his Milwaukee home and wants to see more kids safely enjoy the summer.

"The neighborhood is a good neighborhood if we can keep it under control," Barbee said.
