Milwaukee Co. uses buses to spread word of healthcare.gov

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County leaders hope it's the route you want to take. Signs on buses are directing people to healthcare.gov to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. But something you're just being taken for a ride.

During a visit to the White House on Monday, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele says federal leaders are applauding the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in our community.

"We've been working with the city and the state, non-profits for a long time to get this right," said Abele.

This is the third time Abele has traveled to Washington, D.C. on his own dime to discuss the healthcare transition.

"I actually do think there are a number of aspects about the affordable care act that I think have some real potential," said Abele.

Milwaukee County has budgeted $360,000 for outreach programs to help get residents signed up. That includes funds to enhance the Impact 211 hotline to help answer questions. Some efforts, like these signs on Milwaukee County buses, are at no cost to taxpayers.

"They have a certain amount and flexibility to put whatever they want on the scroll," said Abele.

City Health Commissioner Bevan Baker says healthcare.gov has been working better recently, but there are still glitches. He believes those who have signed up simply by-passed the website altogether.

"Please call.  We have folks that will take your call and help you navigate the system.  You have to try more than once to get something great," said Baker.
