A Milwaukee County Jail inmate diagnosed with a terminal illness died at a hospital. He was accused of killing a community service officer.

A Milwaukee County Jail inmate diagnosed with a terminal illness died at a hospital Friday night, June 16.

The sheriff's office 68-year-old Mohammed Afzal had been in custody since September 2020 for first-degree reckless homicide and was hospitalized Wednesday after multiple stays in the jail's infirmary.

Afzal was accused in the fatal shooting of Milwaukee Police Community Service Officer Naeem Sarosh. Prosecutors said he admitted to shooting Sarosh over grass clippings.

Court records indicate Afzal had a hearing scheduled for June 12, which was adjourned.

Because Afzal was in-custody at the time of his death, the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department will lead an investigation.

Visitation between Afzal and his family prior to his death was coordinated, the sheriff's office said.
