Milwaukee County Sheriff's squad struck during snowy, morning commute
MILWAUKEE COUNTY (WITI) -- The squad of a Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputy was struck shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 26th on northbound I-43 near Holt Ave.
Officials say the deputy was stopped in the median at the scene of a collision between a car and truck just north of Holt Ave. and the squad's emergency lights were activated. The driver of one of the vehicles in the original crash was in the squad with the deputy when the squad was sideswiped. The collision broke the side mirror of the squad -- and scraped paint from the vehicle.
Nobody was hurt in this crash.
In a news release, Sheriff David Clarke reminded motorists to adhere to the Move Over Law on the freeway system. The law requires drivers to shift lanes, or slow down if traffic prohibits moving over, to help safeguard law enforcement officers, emergency responders, and road maintenance workers performing their responsibilities on the freeways. Moving over or slowing down provides a safety zone for a squad car, ambulance, fire truck, tow truck or highway maintenance vehicle that is stopped on the side of the road with its warning lights flashing.
