Wintry weather moves out, ice concerns remain

Southeast Wisconsin's first snowfall of the season created rough road conditions in some areas Thursday morning. Crews could face a challenge Thursday night. If temperatures drop below freezing, and the ground is still wet, it could create icy conditions.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said, from 6 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., there were 38 weather-related incidents – primarily disabled vehicles and minor accidents.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Department of Public Works said it had no issues in the city. Crews began general ice control operations around 6 a.m. – strictly salting. The sanitation area manager said they put down brine on bare pavement before the snow fell.

The National Weather Service is collecting data from the Nov. 21 snowfall in southeast Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee DPW said roughly 100 crews were out on main roads before they moved their focus to side streets and residential areas.

In Brookfield, a private contractor said they stopped salting and started plowing as snow began to pile up.

"Pretty much just going at it – it's wet, very wet stuff, so snowblowers don’t work very well in it," said Mitchell Berge with Dorshak Tree Specialists. "Plows will go through when it’s not too many inches, but it’s still a difficult one no matter what – especially with the time it came and everything."
