MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee man, 23, was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday, Aug. 28 near 6th and Juneau.
Police said the victim was in the crosswalk around 12:30 a.m. when the driver of a pickup ran a red light northbound on 6th Street and struck the man, identified by his mother as Xaiver Casanova Davis. He died at the hospital.
The driver didn't stop, leaving Xaiver for dead.
"He can never be replaced," said Gloria Shaw, Xaiver's mother. "He was just, to know Xaiver was to love him. To me, he was perfect."
Xaiver was Shaw's only son. He captured life's precious moments, along with people's hearts.
"His camera is sitting here," said Shaw. "He was big on family. He was loved by everyone. If you met Xaiver, he had a million-dollar smile."
His young life was cut short early Sunday by the driver of a black pickup with a lift.
"You took my heartbeat away from me," said Shaw. "You broke my heart."
Now, Xaiver's mother can only picture the future he would have had. She said her son had plans to go to Milwaukee Area Technical College this winter.
"He enjoyed the photography and photojournalism," said Shaw. "He wanted to not only be in front of the camera but behind. He was excited about the journey that was going to start in January."
She's now holding onto the memories her son was so careful to capture, sharing a message for the driver who took her son's life.
"Please just turn yourself in because you took my pride and joy away from me before he even got to live," said Shaw.
Xaiver had just gotten a tattoo – a sleeve of roses. Shaw said she plans to get a tattoo herself to pay tribute to him.
Shaw said Xaiver was also a big brother to siblings on his dad's side. He loved old music, all types of pasta and especially, spending time with his family.
