Pedestrian hit, killed on Milwaukee's northwest side; driver arrested

A crash on Milwaukee's northwest side near 88th and Capitol left a pedestrian dead on March 30. The driver, a Milwaukee man, was arrested.

A crash on Milwaukee's northwest side left a pedestrian dead Thursday night, March 30. The driver was arrested.

It happened near 88th and Capitol around 9:30 p.m. The victim, a 35-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Family identified her as Tesa Steele.

"I was coming up Capitol Drive and I saw tons of police cars, yellow tape, and I knew something happened but wasn’t exactly sure," said Camille Jacobs, who lives in the area.

A study done by the city from 2011-2016 showed Capitol Drive is a consistent hot spot for pedestrian crashes. Data from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office show 23 pedestrians died in 2022 after being hit by vehicles.

"It’s not surprising, being that Capitol Drive is one of the worst streets to drive on. I drive this part every day, and it’s really rough over here," said Jacobs.

"My son gets off of the bus stop every day on 88th and Capitol, and my first mindset is: ‘What’s going to happen to him when he gets off the bus?'" Jacobs added. "I don’t want to have to worry about him walking across the street and a car hits him."

Police identified the driver as a 27-year-old Milwaukee man. Charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

Another neighbor who lives right on the corner where the crash took place said things like this are a reality for the neighborhood.

"I always look around. You have to. It's too dangerous, even on the sidewalk," said Stephen Dombrowski. "So sad. I’m so sorry for her family."

Police said the crash investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call MPD at 414-935-7360; to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS or use the P3 tips app.
