2024 Milwaukee homicide victims vigil, community remembers lives lost

Candlelight Vigil to End Violence in Milwaukee

Milwaukee Police Department data shows 126 people have been the victims of homicides thus far in 2024. On Saturday night, the community took a moment to remember those lives lost.

What They're Saying

The third annual Candlelight Vigil to End Violence was held on the city's north side.

"I know how the families feel, and the loss. And how you can feel like everyone forgot about you," said Brenda Hines, who made the event possible.

Hines' son, Donovan, was shot and killed while driving near 29th and Hampton. He was 23 years old. More than seven years later, there have been no arrests or charges filed in connection to his death.

"Used to always, all the time, protect me when I went out to help other families," said Hines.

By The Numbers

A candle for each of the 126 victims was lit on Saturday.

"These are way too many candles," said anti-violence activist Tracey Dent. "If you see something, say something – because all these candles represents a family, too."

"Counting these victims – letting them know that someone cares, someone does recognize that you lost a loved one this year and beyond this year," Hines said. "That’s what I want someone to do for me with Donovan, and it’s healing for me."

MPD data reports homicides are down 22% compared thus far compared to the same point in 2023.
