MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Criminal charges against David Wright of Milwaukee were recently filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court for failure to file Wisconsin income tax returns for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 years.
According to the complaint, Wright, who has worked for the United States Post Office since 1993, received wages of $39,823 in 2009, $64,932 in 2010 and $63,155 in 2011.
The Department of Revenue had sent Wright 10 letters in 2010 requesting that he file his income tax returns without receiving a response.
In the resulting investigation, when he was asked why he had not filed tax returns in the last three years Wright said he had "no reason". Wright admitted he knew he was required to file tax returns by April 15th of each year. Wright further admitted he did not remember when he had last filed an income tax return.
Further investigation found that Wright had not filed an income tax return since 1999 and is estimated to owe the Department of Revenue just over $41,000 in state income taxes for years 2000 to 2011.
If convicted on all counts Wright faces up to 27 months in jail, $30,000 in fines, or both.
Wright is being prosecuted by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office after an investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue's Criminal Investigation Section.
