JetBlue to fly out of Mitchell International come 2022

JetBlue Airways will be flying out of Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport starting in 2022, with direct flights to two major East Coast cities.

JetBlue Airways will be flying out of Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport starting in 2022, officials announced on Wednesday morning, April 21.

The airline will offer nonstop flights to two markets: Boston Logan International Airport and New York/John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Milwaukee Mitchell's director said the move to bring the airline here was years in the making, and in anticipation of the post-pandemic travel surge, setting up the concourse now just makes sense.

"It's a great wave of momentum," said Airport Director Brian Dranzik, speaking of the airport's second airline to become a carrier at Mitchell. "That’s something we put a lot of thought into throughout this, is when people do start to return, what can we do to make sure that it’s a safe and convenient experience?"

For the past year, much of the travel coming through the airport has primarily been business-related, and while these destinations take that into consideration, the opportunity for vacation travel is also there.

"There is certainly for both of those locations," said Dranzik."It’s a hub and a jumping-off point to places like Europe and beyond."

Even if you’re not a big traveler, something you can still get excited about is the fact that more competition means competitive ticket prices.

"This helps provide more direct connections to destinations and it provides a bit of fare competition, which is always good for the traveler and for the community," said Dranzik.

This announcement also means that JetBlue will be the only airline, at this time, flying non-stop to JFK, and it joins Delta as the second company to fly non-stop to Boston.

Flight schedules, aircraft type and the official launch date of the new service are to be determined but airport officials are looking toward early 2022.
