Milwaukee police shooting; man wounded near 7th and Arthur

A search for a man wanted by Milwaukee police ended in gunfire. A Milwaukee police officer shot and wounded a 19-year-old man on Monday night, Jan. 6.  

According to police, officers were in the area of 7th and Arthur around 9:30 p.m. Monday seeking a subject wanted for sexual assault of a child and child enticement.

The officers were informed that the suspect was in a residence and made contact with him. While communicating with the suspect, the suspect pulled out a firearm, police say. 

A struggle ensued between two officers and the suspect over the firearm. One officer discharged his firearm, subsequently striking the suspect.

The suspect, a 19-year-old man, was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. His firearm was recovered. 

Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.

The officer that discharged his firearm is a 35-year-old man with over eight years of service. He will be placed on administrative duty as is routine in officer-involved shootings.

"At this particular point, in regard to being OK – physically. You know when we have these incidents, there is a mental toll and other things we don’t see," said Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman.

The Milwaukee Police Homicide Unit will be investigating this incident.
