The Milwaukee Board of School Directors revealed the finalists for superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools.
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Board of School Directors revealed on Friday, Jan. 31 the finalists for superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools.
Three finalists
What we know:
Over 50 applications for the role were received and 48 candidates were considered. The board announced the following three education leaders as its finalists:
- Dr. Brenda Cassellius, former Superintendent for Boston Public Schools, MA
- Dr. Joshua Starr, former Superintendent for Montgomery County Public Schools, MD
- Dr. Andraé Townsel, current Superintendent for Calvert County Public Schools, MD

Finalists coming to Milwaukee
What's next:
The school board announced on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Friday, Feb. 7, the finalists for superintendent will come to Milwaukee to meet stakeholder groups and have their final interviews with the board.
Two sessions for the public to learn more about the finalists have been scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6. The sessions will be held in the MPS Central Services auditorium. Those meetings will be held at the following times:
- 1 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.
- 5:30 p.m. - 8:15 p.m.
Each finalist will have 45 minutes to introduce themselves to the public – as well as answer questions from those in attendance.
After each session, a QR will be provided to the public so that feedback can be provided to the school board.
The final interviews will be held in a special meeting on Friday, Feb. 7.
The school board aims to announce Milwaukee's next superintendent in late February or early March.

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors are expected to announce the finalists for superintendent of the district.
Timeline:
The former superintendent, Keith Posley, resigned in June 2024 after it was revealed the district failed to report important financial data to the state. The state threatened to withhold millions of dollars in funding as a result.

In July 2024, the school board voted to appoint Eduardo Galvan as MPS' interim superintendent.

The school board announced in August 2024 that it had negotiated a contract with Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) out of Illinois which specializes in superintendent searches.
