To understand the mother's heartbreak, you have to meet the son she lost.

"The pain can’t be taken away," said Kamid Everett. "Bryant loved his family. He was really big on family. That’s my son."

Everett said another teenager, who Bryant knew, got their hands on a gun and fired the fatal shot.

"It was a kid playing with a gun," Everett said. "They were at a friend’s house; my understanding was there was a gun and the gun was pulled."

Police are only saying the circumstances leading up the Saturday night, Dec. 28 shooting are under investigation.

Officers were back in the neighborhood Sunday morning, piecing the case together. We do know police arrested the 18-year-old suspected shooter.

"I’ve been knowing him since he was seven years old. I just feel like it wasn’t on purpose. But he shouldn’t have been playing with a gun," Everett said.

It has been a violent end of the year for young people in Milwaukee. On Christmas Day, two teenagers died in a shooting at 37th and Scott. That same day, gunfire wounded a six-year-old.

Everett said she never imagined the gun violence would take away her child, who loved being in the kitchen.

"He could cook breakfast, burgers. Bryant could really cook," Everett said.

Bryant Triplett would have turned 15 early next year. Instead of celebrating his birthday, his family is preparing a funeral.

"People need to be more cautious with these guns. These guns are costing innocent people their lives," Everett said.

Data shows homicides are down compared to this time last year and the year before.
