Mitchell Airport officials expecting busy spring break travel season this year
MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is expecting a busy spring break travel season this year. TSA estimates are showing an expected 5.4% growth in March daily volume at MKE as compared to last year.
TSA and Mitchell Airport are advising passengers to give themselves extra time during the busy spring travel season. They suggest travelers arrive at the airport two hours before their flight to allow plenty of time to check in, clear security and get to their gates.
“The spring break travel season is always one of our busiest because unlike the holidays where leisure travel picks up but business travel decreases, during the spring break season we see high levels in both markets,” explains Airport Director Izzy Bonilla. “We suggest passengers give themselves plenty of time to help make their travel experience smooth.”
According to TSA, MKE ranks in the top ten airports by increase in spring break volume with an estimated 11,884 spring break travelers each day, in addition to the usual number of business travelers.
“The spring travel season really highlights how Mitchell International is becoming the choice airport for the region as we see travelers from a wide variety of Wisconsin and Illinois communities coming through our gates,” said Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele.
Parking is always a hot commodity during the spring travel season as well. MKE’s on-airport parking options continue to offer the best selection of convenient parking offerings, whether looking for great cost savings with its SuperSaver parking for just $7/day, or the convenience of the parking garage offering the area’s only true covered parking. Travelers can also check the amount of space available in all of MKE’s parking lots before they head to the airport, with the airport’s real time parking availability monitor at http://www.mitchellairport.com/parking/. The monitor is updated in real time to not only show travelers how many spaces are currently available, but also if it is currently filling up or emptying out.
Mitchell Airport offers nonstop flights to 38 destinations coast-to-coast, and 160 international destinations are available from Milwaukee with just one connection. MKE is served by Southwest, Delta, Alaska, Air Canada, American, Frontier, OneJet and United. The nonstop cities map can be found at www.mitchellairport.com.
