Pit bull shot, drugs recovered from Mount Pleasant home

MOUNT PLEASANT (WITI) -- A Mount Pleasant police officer shot and killed a pit bull that appeared aggressive and advanced on another officer late Friday, October 11th.

Officers were called to a home on Sheridan road shortly after 11 p.m. Friday for a report of a loose dog (pit bull). Shortly after getting on the scene, the dog was spotted. It barked at officers and ran into a home. The back door of the home was left open allowing the dog to come and go. Officers noticed the dog appeared aggressive.

A second officer arrived on scene with a dog pole and had planned to safely contain the dog. He was not able to contain the dog with that equipment.

Later, one of the officers had his back turned away from the dog as he knocked on the door to the residence -- and attempted to get the owner to come outside. At that moment the dog, which was outside, charged at that officer. A second officer on scene observed the dog advance on the officer. This officer used his service weapon and shot the dog to protect the officer. The dog died as a result of being shot. The officer was not hurt.

They say marijuana and drug paraphernalia was visible from the door.

A neighbor, Domingo Chavez, tells us the gunshot woke him up.  Chavez says he saw officers in the backyard of the home with flashlights.  He recalls the dog being loose in the past.

Officers continued with their attempt to make contact with the property / dog owner. No one was home.

Then, the officers located illegal drugs on the property.  They say marijuana and drug paraphernalia was visible from the door.  A search warrant was drafted and served at the home. Officers recovered drugs and a significant amount of drug-related equipment.

Mt. Pleasant Police investigators are following up on leads. Police have a suspect. But at this time, no arrests have been made and the suspect name is not being released.
