Move-in day goes smoothly for freshmen at UW-Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Wednesday, August 28th was the first of three days students were scheduled to move into the residence halls at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

With about 2,700 students moving in in just three days, some incoming freshmen and their parents thought they were in for a long day. However, they were surprised right off the bat from an organized line of cars, to dozens of volunteers and staff members on hand, to a planned system for using the elevators. The UWM staff had the day under control.

The Schmidt family expected long lines, long waits, and lots of hours spent moving.  But 30 minutes later, they were out the door.

“Expect delays, expect to wait for the elevator,” said Kathy Schmidt of what they were told. “But they were really well organized and it went really quick.”

“Right away the carts are wrapped, the elevators are moving really fast, they have a really good service here,” added her daughter Olivia, a freshman at UWM.

It gave Olivia, and the other students, more time to get used to their new home for the year, which is whole point of the rest of the week. The week is dedicated to students and staff.

There will be a series of events designed to help students meet new people and explore the campus and Milwaukee.
