Neighbors, acquaintances remember Zina Haughton
BROWN DEER -- Neighbors and acquaintances of Zina Haughton are upset over her sudden death. But not all of them are surprised by what they learned of her fate. Haughton was one of three killed in the shooting Sunday, October 21st at the Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield. The gunman was Haughton's ex-husband, 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton, who died inside the salon building of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ernest Polk lives across the street from the Brown Deer house Zina and Radcliffe Haughton shared. He says neighbors knew they had problems.
"With the cars, you know, he'd block her in so she couldn't get out. Little things, you know, and then they'd be arguing about that," Polk said.
On Monday, Polk offered some information about 42-year-old Zina Haughton -- one day after she was killed.
"We'd talk about her yard and the flowers, and she'd do planting in those buckets out there," Polk said.
Dave Robbins, who works at a local establishment Zina frequented, told FOX6 News word of the shooting was not as surprising as he wishes it had been.
"I have talked to some of our mutual friends recently and they said that she was fearful. She feared for her life, from him," Robbins said.
Robbins describes Zina as friendly and always smiling -- particularly when talking about her two daughters.
"She wanted nothing more than to be a parent, be a mom and raise her children," Robbins said.
Robbins explained, Zina did not share much about the trouble she had at home. Zina and Radcliffe's marriage reportedly began to fall apart after she confronted him about an affair. When she threatened to leave, Radcliffe reportedly slashed her tires, leading to a restraining order being filed by Zina against Radcliffe a few weeks ago.
"She was just a really strong, brave individual and to hear that it was a domestic violence situation was almost even more surprising to me because of how I felt about her as a strong individual," Robbins said.
Robbins says Zina had him in her home to cut his hair free of charge. He says Zina's friends are trying to stay strong and are interested in helping Zina's daughters get through this.
