New Orleans attack: Wisconsin security expert discusses prevention
WAUKESHA, Wis. - A deadly New Year's Day attack on New Orleans' Bourbon Street shined a light on how other areas, including Wisconsin, can learn from tragedy. Investigators said it could be an act of terrorism.
Planning and prevention
Security expert Brian Dorow, owner of Waukesha's Secure Resources Unlimited, said incidents like Wednesday's are becoming more common. Having the mindset that they could happen in the future should pave the way for more preparation.

"After we’ve seen some of these shootings in school settings, these soft targets, crowded places, we should always expect this is going to happen," he said. "How we’re going to prevent it is by the security measures we put in place."
Dorow mentioned a trip to Times Square and remembered deterrents that included trucks on the streets, cement blocks, barriers, check points and more law enforcement in crowded settings.
Dorow is also an advocate of learning from past incidents and adjusting tactics.
Waukesha parade attack
In 2021, Darrell Brooks drove an SUV into the Waukesha Christmas Parade. Six people died, and dozens of others were physically injured.
"I was absolutely horrified," Dorow said of the attack in New Orleans. "This is reminiscent of an event we had in Waukesha."

Dorow said the trauma of these attacks can also have psychological impacts, like being scared of going out into crowds. He encourages people to be resilient, rather than live in fear.
"Let’s just try to prevent it, but let’s not give up our pastime, our way of what we like having fun," he said.
