WASHINGTON, D.C. (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned Oak Creek Police Lieutenant Brian Murphy is set to attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address.
"He has bullets still in his body from the wounds he suffered that day," Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi said.
Murphy was shot multiple times after being among the first responders to the scene of the Sikh Temple shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin over the summer.
President Obama is set to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening, February 12th -- and Lieutenant Murphy will be a special guest.
"It's quite an honor for Brian. Brian's a quality individual. I've known him for many years," Oak Creek Battalion Chief Rodney Palmer said.
Palmer was at the scene on August 5th, as Wade Page opened fire inside the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek. He says Tuesday's State of the Union address will be special for his first responders.
"I'm very proud Oak Creek is being honored this way," Palmer said.
"I would guess he'll be front and center. I would be surprised if the President didn't mention him by name," Mayor Scaffidi said.
This will not be the first time Oak Creek leaders have met with the First Family.
"I was fortunate to meet the first lady several weeks after the shooting. For me, it was a great honor. I'm sure it will be for Brian as well," Mayor Scaffidi said.
Several Sikh leaders and victims' family members made the trip to the White House back in December -- some also getting the opportunity to meet with the first lady. Now, Lieutenant Murphy will share in that experience.
"He didn't hesitate. He did his job at the highest level, and that's something worthy of being rewarded," Mayor Scaffidi said.
