OAK CREEK (WITI) -- Students at Oak Creek High School are being called upon to take a pledge against texting while driving.

Oak Creek’s mayor proclaimed Thursday, October 31st as "Don't Text and Drive Pledge Day." At Oak Creek High School, he spent the day talking about why that is so important.

“There aren't many things that all of you can do to impact public safety but this is an easy one. There's no message that's that important that you can't wait until you stop to tell that person that message,” said Mayor Steve Scaffidi.

Scaffidi teamed up with AAA, AT&T and the Wisconsin State Patrol to explain to students how dangerous distracted driving can be.

“What do you say to a parent you just told their daughter or son was killed in a car accident,” Trooper Steve Lindemann with the Wisconsin State Patrol asked students during the assembly.

The students saw how dangerous it could be when three of their classmates demonstrated texting and driving during a distracted driving simulator. The students also watched a video urging them not to text behind the wheel.

Some students said they can see the dangers of texting and driving and won’t do it.

“It's just a smart decision not to because it's not safe,” said Justin Schlidt.

“I think it's a really good idea to let them know that it's really dangerous to do because it's really not a good idea,” said Stacey Javier.

“It scares me. I hate when people do it,” said Olivia Abifarin.

Over 500 juniors attended the assemblies held at Oak Creek High School Thursday.
