One dead, three hurt in Sunday's wreck on I-94 near Mount Pleasant
RACINE COUNTY (WITI) -- We're getting a better idea of just how chaotic it was on the roads on Sunday, December 8th. 60 crashes were reported in Racine County -- and one person was killed in a pileup on I-94.
A multiple-vehicle collision on I-94 near Mount Pleasant was reported around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
According to witness statements, two semis were stopped in the southbound lanes due to a crash that occurred in front of their location. After coming to a stop, each truck was struck in the rear by several southbound vehicles. They included two SUVs and a sedan.
After striking the rear of the semi, the sedan was struck in the rear by a seperate southbound semi. A male front seat passenger of the sedan was fatally injured as a result of the crash. The other occupants of the sedan as well as those in the two SUVs were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Several other vehicles were involved in the massive pileup Sunday -- and the Racine County Communication Center was bombarded with calls from panicked drivers.
The Racine County Sheriff's Department says most of the injuries suffered Sunday were minor, from broken bones to lacerations.
Two hospitals reported taking in at least 50 patients. Conditions were so bad that some ambulances were forced to carry several of the injured in one trip.
Those who weren't waiting for emergency crews were waiting on tow trucks.
"It was a good half-mile of nothing but wrecked cars and trucks," Jerry Michel said.
Michel owns Michel's Garage in Franksville.
"Lots of injured people. Lots of property damage. Probably 90% of them are totaled. Multiple hits all over on them," Michel said.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is still investigating Sunday's Racine County fatality.
In another incident Sunday, a Racine County Sheriff's deputy's vehicle was totaled after another vehicle lost control and smashed into the back of the squad.
