One killed, three wounded in shooting on Milwaukee's north side

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police say 17-year-old DeQuan Carter was killed and three others wounded after a shooting early Wednesday morning, July 11th on the city's north side.

Police say the shooting incident happened around midnight in front of a home near N. 34th and Center, where a family had gathered for a party.

Officials say Carter died at the scene. Three of the Carter's cousins were sent to the hospital with bullet wounds. One is in critical condition, and two others are being treated, but expected to survive.

Princess Carter told FOX6 News her cousin was killed in the crossfire. Carter was there as the gunman approached the party and began shooting into the crowd.

"I was out here, and I'm eight months pregnant. I could have got hit. My cousins could have got hit. Anybody could have got hit," Carter said.

Police say the surviving victims are well known to them, with long criminal histories.

Police placed cameras in the area and deployed deputies on foot, looking for leads.

Meanwhile, the family says they have no idea who may be responsible for a deadly ending to a night intended as a celebration in a neighborhood struggling to end its cycle of violence.

"I believe it was out of hatred," Carter said.

DeQuan Carter was a student at Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan. Wisconsin State Superintendent Tony Evers issued the following statement Wednesday evening:

“I wish to extend my deepest sympathy and offer my condolences to the family of Dequan Carter. He was needlessly gunned down in Milwaukee while attending a party for his father. This didn’t have to happen, and it is a tragedy that this young man has left us too soon.

“Dequan was a student at our Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan, and he will be missed, not only by his family, but also by his fellow students and the staff at the school. The school administrators are currently preparing resources to help the staff and students who knew him adjust to this sad news, but we must all try to figure out how to stop this senseless violence. A young person was needlessly taken away from us today, and that is a tremendous loss for all of us.”

The shooting comes on the same day Milwaukee police announced shooting deaths are slightly down in the city of Milwaukee from last year.
