MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee's Film Festival concluded its 15-day run Thursday night, October 11th, and organizers say this year's festival drew a 40% increase in attendance, as well as a significant increase in sold-out screenings.
Organizers say over 50,000 people participated in this year's festival. There were 77 sold-out screenings this year, compared with 22 in 2011.
The centerpiece of this year’s festival was the U.S. Premiere of Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney’s newest documentary, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence In The House Of God, with Gibney and several subjects of the film in attendance.
Centering on four courageous students at St. John’s School for the Deaf in St. Francis, WI, the film exposes the clerical sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church and a cover-up that leads all the way to the highest offices of the Vatican.
The film received this year’s award for Best Feature Film.
