Oshkosh man gets Bronze Star 70 years later
OSHKOSH (AP) -- An 89-year-old Oshkosh man has finally received his Bronze Star 70 years later. Don Christman received it with about 100 family and friends at the First United Methodist Church in Oshkosh on Sunday, August 26th.
Christman served as an Army sergeant in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, qualifying him for a commendation.
His friend from church, Art Weinert, drove him to the local veteran's affairs office about the medal after reading an article another veteran finally receiving the Bronze Star.
Christman said he was more concerned about his wife and two children after the war than the medal. He says returning home was his medal.
He says he'll wear it in honor of those who didn't make it home.
