Paul Ryan says Trump phone call was 'productive,' still no endorsement

MILWAUKEE - House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday said he had a "productive" phone call with Donald Trump the night before, but did not provide details or throw his support behind Trump.

At a news conference on Capitol Hill, Ryan looked far more comfortable discussing legislative action than Trump, who has clinched the Republican nomination. A small number of unbound delegates pushed him over the magic number of 1,237 delegates he needed, the Associated Press calculated.

“We had a very productive phone call, I’ll leave it at that,” Ryan told reporters during a news conference on Capitol Hill. Ryan and Trump met face-to-face earlier this month; their staffs have also been meeting over policy issues and 2016 strategy.

Ryan faced two questions about Trump, sidestepping when asked if he was concerned about how it looked for the House speaker to not be endorsing the Republican nominee.

“What I’m most concerned about is making sure we have real party unity, not pretend party unity,” Ryan said.
