JANESVILLE -- U.S. Congressman Paul Ryan of Janesville was selected Saturday, August 11th as Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate. Now, those who live in Ryan's hometown are reacting to the news.
Janesville, Wisconsin -- the town of 60,000 has been surrounded by media and campaigners since Romney's announcement. There are differing opinions regarding the selection of the potential future vice president of the United States.
"I think it's great for Wisconsin. I think it's great for Janesville and I think it's great for the country," Janesville voter Robert Mills said.
Ryan's downtown Janesville office was surrounded by media and campaigners Saturday. The news was the buzz at Janesville's farmers market.
"His ideas are solid. We have a deficit problem that needs to be solved," Mills said.
However, not everyone was happy for the seven-term Congressman.
"He's all about saving money and saving money for the rich, but not for the people who might need a safety net," Janesville voter Laurie Bauer said.
Bauer said she is not happy with Ryan's economic plan that would curb entitlements and change Medicaid to a voucher-like system.
"It scares me," Bauer said.
Meantime, at Ryan's alma mater Janesville Craig High School, parents watched their kids play in a football scrimmage. Their minds wandered, excited about announcement and what lessons it could teach their kids.
"It's very inspirational for them -- that anyone can do anything if they work hard and dedicate themselves," parent Fred Gray said.
While political opinions differ, everyone agrees Janesville is now in the spotlight and it will be for the next few months.
Paul Ryan is expected in Wisconsin Sunday evening. A rally will be held at the Waukesha Expo Center beginning at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening.
