Plane crash lands, some dogs ready for adoption

After a plane crash-landed at Western Lakes Golf Club in Pewaukee, HAWS said some of the dogs that were on board are ready for adoption.

Some of the dogs that were on board a plane that crash-landed at Western Lakes Golf Club on Tuesday, Nov. 15 are now available for adoption.

According to the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County, which responded to the crash-landing scene to assist, seven dogs are ready to land in their forever homes.

Officials tell FOX6 News the call for the crash landing came in just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Three adults on the plane suffered non-life-threatening injuries – and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The flight was a planned transport, bringing at-risk adoptable dogs from shelters in the southern U.S. to HAWS and several partner shelters.

"Really excited to see some of these guys get some of the love we know everyone is ready to give them," said Maggie Tate-Techtmann with HAWS.

Some of that love will come from members of Lake Country Fire & Rescue who showed up to the crash site and are now being approved to adopt.

"We have an incredible community that knows how to live humane and is really interested in caring for these dogs," Tate-Techtmann said.

All the animals were triaged at HAWS by staff veterinarians. Twenty-one dogs ended staying up at HAWS while the others went to different southeastern Wisconsin shelters.

HAWS said Oak Creek-based pet food company Stella & Chewy's is covering adoption fees. Wilde Subaru is also coming in to help cover the animals' care.

In addition, $12,000 has been donated from people across the country. Funds will also cover training and behavioral classes, if needed – something not normally offered along with adoptions.

"Because the community has been so generous, we thought it’d be of interest for the community to ensure these guys are welcomed into our Greater Waukesha and Milwaukee communities with a lot of love," said Tate-Techtmann.

HAWS said more dogs will soon be available for adoption. HAWS adoption hours are Monday-Friday from 1-5 p.m. and weekends from 12-3 p.m.

For members of the public who wish to help, monetary donations to assist with medical care can be made via the HAWS website or dropped off at the shelter on Northview Road in Waukesha. HAWS is also accepting supply item donations – such as towels, blankets, plastic animal travel crates, and enrichment toys and treats.
