Pokemon Go draws at least 100 to Lake Park on scorcher of a Sunday: "This is actually slow"

MILWAUKEE -- Pokemon Go is drawing people to Milwaukee's Lake Park -- and on Sunday, July 24th, amid a Heat Advisory and heat indices in the triple digits, FOX6 News found more than 100 people roaming around, trying to catch them all.

Pokemon Go set a new Apple record as the app with the most App Store downloads in its first week. Ever. Apple confirmed the record, but didn't have any specific numbers to share.

Shortly after its July 6th debut, Pokemon Go shot to the top of the App Store's top free apps charts and has stayed there ever since. The Poke-effect has impacted other apps as well. The third most download free app in the U.S. is currently Poke Radar, an app which helps Pokemon Go users find nearby Pokemon.

It's also the top free app in the Google Play store.

At Lake Park on Sunday, some were speaking a language you may have never heard before.

"Magmar, Hitmonchan, Ponyta," Melissa Bante, a Pokemon trainer from West Allis said.

"Psyduck. I have about 25 of them right now. I am a psyduck purist," Nickolas Doxtater, a Pokemon trainer from Milwaukee's south side said.

The augmented reality game uses smartphone cameras to superimpose the cute, digital creatures on real world settings. The mash-up app encourages people to gain points by chasing the perky creatures around their own neighborhoods.

Hundreds of Pokemon trainers filled Lake Park Sunday -- searching for the creatures.

"This is actually slow compared to what it really normally is," Doxtater said.

These Pokemon trainers said huge crowds in Lake Park are the new normal since the game's release.

"It's just a great way to explore nature and meet other people," Bante said.

Lake Park has become a Pokemon hot spot.

"People were telling us 'you gotta go to Lake Park. Gotta go to Lake Park,'" Bante said.

The game has been praised for getting people up and outdoors.

"It's pretty much a cardio workout," Bante said.

"I'm here with my fellow geeks enjoying the beautiful afternoon," Doxtater said.
