Donley Carey

RACINE -- Racine police arrested on Wednesday, March 4 the man they say is suspected of killing Demarcus Anderson near 9th and Memorial last month. The suspect is identified as 34-year-old Donley Carey of Racine.

Carey was taken into custody early Wednesday in Grand Rapids, Michigan -- and online records indicate he is already charged with the following criminal counts:

Police said Anderson was found dead on the main floor of a building in the area near 9th and Memorial on Tuesday, Feb. 25. He appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

According to a criminal complaint, a witness told police that an after-bar party was going on at the building. The witness told police that Anderson accused Carey of being a police informant and wearing a wire. After Carey removed his clothing to prove he was not wearing a wire, and a group of people cleared the area, the witness told police that Carey shot at Anderson.

The complaint states that police found Anderson wrapped in garbage bags with shell casings from a .40-caliber handgun.

Carey's criminal history includes a 2003 conviction for attempted armed robbery in Racine and, more recently, a 2019 conviction of criminal trespassing in Illinois.

A status conference in the case is scheduled for Apil 15.
