Police release disturbing new details on deaths of Kenosha children

KENOSHA -- Kenosha police have released new details into the tragic deaths of two young children found dead inside their home. Sunday, September 13th the mother of the children is being held at the Kenosha County Jail, now facing two counts of homicide.

Early Saturday morning, September 12th police were called to a home near 50th St. and 33rd Avenue in Kenosha. Authorities located three-year-old Alicia and one-year-old Javier inside -- and the mother, Lucia Hernandez Alvarez, was found bleeding from stab wounds.

Authorities have not determined the cause of death of the children, but do say they did not suffer any trauma. Investigators believe the children were first medicated, and then suffocated by their mother.

In a news conference held on Sunday, police say there is significant evidence Alvarez is the one responsible for killing her children. Kenosha Police Chief John Morrissey provided details.

"There is a journal or a log what was done to each child, the time that each child stopped breathing," said Chief Morrissey.

Police say Alvarez tried to kill herself too, to let the children's father be free by himself.

The father of the children came home on Saturday and found them all lying in the same bed -- the children dead, Alvarez alive. Police later took the father in for questioning but say only as a witness, he is not a suspect.

Authorities say the stab wounds Alvarez suffered were self-inflicted. She was treated at a Kenosha hospital and released Sunday afternoon, September 13th.

Police say Alvarez also mailed a package detailing her plans to her sister -- but that package didn't arrive until Sunday.

Sunday evening, September 13th a vigil was held on 33rd Avenue in Kenosha. The universal language was sadness. Many in the group stood in silence, because they just don't have the words.

"When I heard, it broke my heart because I have children of my own," said Rosalinda Gutierrez, family friend.

Children not old enough to understand why, brought toys to the vigil in the Mexican tradition.

"In the place you died, that's what you're supposed to do," said Gutierrez.

"It's hard not just for the family. For everybody, it's hard," said Gutierrez.

Since Alvarez was released from the hospital, she is now in Kenosha County Jail. She is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Monday, September 13th.

Autopsies are scheduled for the children on Monday, September 14th to determine the cause of death.
