Police say man used child in attempt to conceal marijuana possession

BROOKFIELD -- 25-year-old Sedrick Sanders was pulled over for speeding on Brookfield, with two of his children in the backseat of his car. Police say Sanders had marijuana in the car and used his child to try to get away with the crime!

"It was a little shocking for us," Brookfield Police Captain Jim Adlam said.

Police say on Sunday, December 9th, a traffic stop turned into a drug bust. Police say Sanders was speeding westbound from Lilly Road onto North Avenue.

Police stopped Sanders near Pilgrim Road.

Police say a one-year-old and three-year-old were in the backseat of Sanders' vehicle. It's what police say they saw in one of the kid's hands that was most shocking to them.

"Another officer arrived and observed in plain view, the three-year-old was holding a baggie of what we believed at the time to be marijuana," Cpt. Adlam said.

According to the criminal complaint in the case, at first, Sanders told police a friend had left the marijuana in his car. He thought his child may have picked it up.

"Typically, we don't come across small children holding bags of drugs," Cpt. Adlam said.

The criminal complaint says Sanders later admitted the bag of marijuana was his.

Police tested the small bag with seven smaller, individual bags and the tests came back positive.

Sanders has been charged with a misdemeanor drug possession charge and is awaiting trial.

If he is convicted, Sanders faces a $1,000 fine or up to six months behind bars. During the traffic stop, Brookfield police discovered Sanders had a warrant out for his arrest in Racine County for a traffic violation.
