Possibility for snow this weekend means DPW crews might be doing snow removal and leaf cleanup

MILWAUKEE -- After steady rain this week, measurable snow is possible as we head into the weekend. This, as we're still dealing with the remnants of fall, and working to clean up those leaves.

There are still some leaves on the threes, and a lot of them in some cases.

Water caused some problems for drivers on Tuesday evening and Tuesday night -- as steady rain fell.

DPW officials said early Wednesday they had handled 155 surface ponding complaints due to that rain.

One of the things that can cause street flooding is leaves collecting in the sewer grates.

"I saw standing water in the streets," Dirk Anderson said.

Raking leaves

That was a reminder for Anderson to take action -- especially considering the possibility of snow this weekend.

"If snow falls on these things, it makes snow blowing rather difficult," Anderson said.

DPW officials are ramping up cleanup efforts as well.

"Our push in our division is to get all the leaves up before Thanksgiving -- but obviously with a little hint of snow coming in it obviously makes us move a little faster," Jeffery Smith with the DPW said.

The problem is that not all the leaves have fallen from the trees yet.

"As long as weather permits, we`ll be continuing picking up leaves," Smith said.

And that might mean crews have to do leaf pickup and snow removal simultaneously.

"We will try to maneuver around those piles if we`re plowing -- if we have to go into a plowing situation, but generally we`ll continue to pick up leaves afterward and we`ll try not to plow those back on the sidewalks for residents," Smith said.
