PR experts say Braun's apology is a step toward rebuilding reputation

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Brewers suspended left-fielder Ryan Braun issued a written apology on Thursday, August 22nd, admitting his use of performance enhancing drugs during the 2011 season. He also apologized for lying about the situation.

Many fans aren't completely satisfied with the apology, stressing the belief that Braun should have apologized in person.

"I don't know how genuine it is when you write a written apology," said Chris Bush. "I really don't have any sympathy for him."

"He should have just come out and said something," added Robert Porter.

Public Relations experts say Braun's apology was the right thing to do and, although he should have done it sooner, it was a step in the right direction.

"There are the kinds of things necessary to rehabilitate his reputation," said Brian Bennett, President of Stir Advertising and Integrated Messaging. "Hopefully this is the first step in a positive direction for him."

Bennett says in order for Braun to continue moving forward, he's going to have to answer tough questions and face the fans.

"I'd maybe give it a week and then come out and face the music. You want this to be ancient history by the time next season starts," added Bennett.

With time, patience and even more apologies, Bennett believes Braun could move past all the negativity surrounding the ordeal and win back the hearts of Brewers fans.

"If he's successful and he continues to do well and he's an asset to the team, people will move on," said Bennett.

The true test, Bennett says, is when Braun returns to baseball next season.
