"Pretty terrible!" As winter storm dumps snow, sleet, freezing rain, biggest hazard was on the roads

RACINE COUNTY -- The biggest hazard seemed to be the roads on Monday, December 28th as a winter storm dumped snow, sleet and freezing rain on southeastern Wisconsin. This was just the second time during this mild winter we've experienced a snow event, and police, deputies and tow truck drivers were quite busy dealing with crashes and spinouts.

Along with the precipitation came high winds on Monday.

A Winter Storm Warning went into effect on Monday morning, and it will remain in effect through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday.

This storm was a reminder for many on Monday that winter is back in Wisconsin.

Jeff Chun was on his way back to Naperville, Illinois -- a drive he expected would take six hours, instead of three -- thanks to Mother Nature.

"(Conditions) are pretty terrible," Chun said.

It was slow going across the state with near white-out conditions -- and even some thunder and lightning!

"The wipers stopped working on me. Not a good place for that," John Grulich said.

Grulich had to take a quick break before heading back out onto I-94. He was just happy he wasn't one of the dozens who spun out on the road on Monday.

Racine County spinouts

"I`ve seen quite a few (spinouts) in Racine County, I`ve probably seen three!" Grulich said.

But the good news for those who did find themselves stuck -- FOX6 News found plenty of people offering a helping hand as the snow continued to fall in southeastern Wisconsin.

Officials with the Racine County Communication Center say from 7:00 a.m. Monday through 9:00 p.m. Monday, the following calls came in:

Racine County

There were several crashes in the Racine/Kenosha County area on Monday.

A crash closed all lanes on southbound I-94 near County K in Racine County temporarily late Monday morning. All lanes reopened around 11:15 a.m.

Dispatchers in Racine and Kenosha counties said they were seeing issues with semi trucks on Monday.

Racine County spinouts

Officials in Racine on Monday afternoon were on the scene of a jackknifed semi on I-94 SB between Highway 20 and Highway K. All of the southbound lanes of I-94 were closed in the area. Traffic was able to get around this crash via the median shoulder, according to DOT officials. This scene was cleared around 2:30 p.m.

The two right lanes of I-41/I-94 at Mile Marker 334 were closed due to a crash in Racine County late on Monday afternoon.
