Racine Co. deputy returns man with dementia to his home
RACINE (WITI) -- A Racine County sheriff's deputy who came upon a man with dementia on Wednesday, October 16th safely returned him to his home.
The deputy was patrolling the north middle area of Racine County on Wednesday when he spotted a man walking down the side of the road. Based on the earliness of the hour, the deputy stopped to check on the man's welfare. As he approached the man, he noticed the man was elderly and wearing only pajamas and a jacket. When asked if he was alright, the elderly man appeared confused and stated he was not sure where he was at. The man stated he lived on the south side of Milwaukee.
The deputy requested the man sit in his squad to warm up while he retrieved his information. The man’s address was located, and the man was less than a mile from his home. His caretaker at the residence verified he lived there, advised that the elderly man suffers from dementia, and stated he has never done this before. The man was returned home safely thanks to the efforts of the deputy.
The Racine County Sheriff’s Office reminds those who care for someone who suffers from dementia, Alzheimer’s, or any similar diseases to take precautionary measures to ensure for their loved ones’ safety.
