Prior to the assault, a corrections officer completed a safety and security check in the dayroom where the assault occurred. The correctional officer continued to supervise inmates on the same wing when the perpetrator attacked the victim. During the next safety and security check, the correctional officer located the unresponsive victim and initiated lifesaving measures.

An initial check of the security cameras within the dayroom revealed that the assault lasted less than one minute. All the emergency buttons in every cell were functional but were not activated by any of the inmates who witnessed the assault.

The attack left the victim on life support at the hospital, according to his attorney.

It's unclear how much time went by between the attack and when the victim was found.

The 35-year-old was transferred from Wisconsin Department of Corrections custody in late November to Racine County to appear on an open case.
