Racine police look for armed men roaming the streets: "I asked the officer is it safe, he said no"

RACINE (WITI) -- Armed men in Racine -- walking all over a residential neighborhood. The scary part... They slipped away before police could get them.

Squad cars lined Spring and State St. in Racine Friday afternoon, July 25th.

"It was a little nervous I mean I had to put my baby in the house for a second," says Valeria Fischer.

Fischer was sitting on her porch braiding her daughter's hair when the commotion started.

"It seemed like somebody was being held hostage the way that they were acting," says Fischer.

Turns out, police received a call about two men with guns along these streets.

"We happened to have several squads in the area. One of our responding officers believed he saw one of the suspects jump over a fence," says Sargeant Jessie Metoyer, Racine Police Department.

So they set up a perimeter. Steve Avila saw the whole thing.

"'Next thing you know you have a whole bunch of officers pulling up. Guns are coming out, I`m running in the yard, I`m getting the dog, I`m getting all the children in the house. I asked the officer is it safe, he said no," says Avila.

The officers searched several homes of the homes. In early spring and summer, the Racine Police Department has received several calls about gun violence.

"We wanted to put a stop to that and since the beginning of the year, we've recovered over 100 guns and that`s 60-70% more than this time last year," says Metoyer.

No one was found in the pursuit and the investigation is still ongoing.
