Racine police: Standoff with man threatening to blow up home ends peacefully

RACINE (WITI) -- Racine police officers responded to the 200 block of N. Memorial Dr. on Monday, August 4th around 7:10 p.m. after receiving a 911 hang-up call from a man threatening to blow up his home.

Repeated attempts were made to reestablish contact. Once contact was made, loud arguing was heard over the phone.

When authorities arrived on scene, officers established a perimeter -- and N. Memorial Drive was shut down between 9th and 6th Streets.

Family members exited the home, at which time officers learned the man was experiencing a mental health crisis.

The male suspect in crisis threatened to blow up the home by dismantling the gas stove. We Energies and the Racine Fire Department responded and staged in the area of assistance.

Officers than began contacting neighboring homes to evacuate them while trying to regain contact with the man.

SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team were activated.

A member of the Crisis Negotiations Team was able to establish phone contact with the party.

According to officials, at 9:30 p.m., after lengthy negotiations, the man exited the home peacefully and was detained.

The man was transported to the hospital for mental health evaluation and treatment.
