Red Cross blood shortage, donations encouraged
The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as severe winter weather has further impacted the ability to rebuild the blood supply.
MILWAUKEE - The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage as severe winter weather has further impacted the ability to rebuild the blood supply.
Blood and platelet donors are urged to give now to help ensure lifesaving medical procedures are not delayed.
As much of the country warms up this week, individuals are urged to make an appointment now to give blood or platelets by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

For Todd Ludorf, donating is part of his lifestyle.
"I first started when I went to high school," he said. "The janitor's kid needed an open heart surgery, so I donated that first time for him."
He's been doing this regularly for 45 years.
"You can give five times a year and I try to make it to at least four, if not all five."
With the recent severe winter weather, very few people have attended blood drives.
"We have seen 15,000 donations across the United States in just this month," said Jennifer Warren, regional communications director for Red Cross Wisconsin Region.

She said donations have fallen 40% in the last two decades and with the extreme temperatures and low supply, it’s been more challenging to move the vital product into hospitals.
This is definitely an issue that's concerning to the public because when we don't have enough blood donations, we don't have enough blood to stock hospital shelves," Warren said.
