Two arrested in connection with MU attempted robberies, shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Marquette University students are in the midst of finals week -- but there's one thing they don't have to worry about anymore. An MU student was shot on Friday morning, May 2nd, following three attempted armed robberies. Now, Milwaukee police say two suspects are in custody.

Milwaukee police say they arrested a 19-year-old man on Friday morning -- but they were looking for another man who initially got away.

Police have now taken that 20-year-old man into custody -- and students are breathing a sigh of relief.

"I live right up there on the third floor so a lot of people were freaking out," MU freshman Abe Stamper said.

At O'Donnell Hall, students were stressed out over three armed robbery attempts that happened early Friday morning near 18th and Wisconsin.

A 19-year-old MU freshman was shot in the hand. His dorm-mates say he was trying to protect a friend who was being robbed.

"The guy across the hall from me had the gun pointed at him and actually, the student who got shot, punched the guy in the face and that`s when the gun went off and shot him," MU freshman Julian Garcia said.

Students say they're relieved to learn two people are in custody.

"It`s good to know they actually did follow up and managed to get the guy -- especially with something as serious as this happening, so it did give me a little bit of confidence," Stamper said.

The shooting victim was treated for injuries and released.

Marquette officials maintain the campus is safe -- pointing to various emergency phones and cameras.

The students at O'Donnell Hall say they know they have to protect themselves.

"I`m gonna be more cautious everywhere I go and make sure, obviously, the buddy system is the best way to stay safe in this area," Garcia said.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office says it is now reviewing the cases against the suspects arrested.

A spokeswoman says there is no timetable for a decision on charges.
