Remembering the Sandy Hook tragedy one year later
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Saturday, December 14th marked the one year anniversary of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The magnitude of the tragedy has touched people across the country, including many in the Milwaukee area who vow never to forget the victims.
The group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America hosted a remembrance service Saturday afternoon. The group hopes to pursue change legislatively, with the aim of keeping guns out of the hands of people who would use them for harm.
"I know that what we're doing is important and because of that I know that we will be successful. History teaches us that," said one speaker at the service.
The group was formed the day after the Sandy Hook shooting with the hopes that one day a community free of gun violence will be a reality.
"We're a grass-roots organization of parents from all across the country," said group member Anneliese Dickman. "Most of us in this country are tired of having moments of silence. We don't want to have any more moments of silence, we want to live loud and joyful lives."
Bells in Milwaukee tolled 26 times at 1:30 Saturday afternoon in honor of the 26 victims of the shooting. Similar services were also held in Appleton and Madison on Saturday.
