Report: Opponents of streetcar project to force delay on Common Council vote
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Business Journal reports opponents of the proposed streetcar project in downtown Milwaukee plan to "force a delay" on a decision during a meeting of the Common Council on Wednesday, January 21st. If successful, that move would push the final vote off until February 10th -- and "create more time for organizers to force a referendum on the project."
Milwaukee Aldermen Bob Donovan and Joe Davis are leading a group that's seeking 31,000 signatures in 60 days. If they get them, a referendum could be put on the April ballot asking voters to decide whether they want the streetcar.
Meanwhile, supporters of the streetcar project held a news conference on Tuesday morning at City Hall. They talked about expansion that could take place on the streetcar project once it gets rolling. That expansion includes destinations such as Mitchell International Airport, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University.
