Flannel run supports first responders

Even in the chilly February weather, more than 500 runners faced the Saturday cold for the annual Flannel 5K/10K at Menomonee Park in Menomonee Falls.

Even in the chilly February weather, more than 500 runners faced the Saturday cold for the annual Flannel 5K/10K at Menomonee Park in Menomonee Falls.

"People come out here, they love the flannel. We will have people with Speedos on and tank tops and shirtless. It’s unbelievable," said Sean Osborne, president of the Flannel 5K.

Runners came from all over the area. Catherine Pampel from Kewaskum said the run is a great way to get in shape.

"I’m looking forward to just end it without walking or stopping, hoping for a PR, but I'm really just here to be able run it all the way through," said Pampel.

The race is also about giving back to local first responders and veterans. They team up with the Silver Circle Foundation and Operation: Finally Home.

"You feel good about running when you know you're helping out an organization, and you’re helping out the community," said Charles Burghaus, Silver Circle Foundation board member.

Pampel is also a veteran and served in the U.S. Navy for five years.

"I always say when someone says thank you for your service, I always say thank you for your support – because we can’t do that stuff out here without the people back home," she added.

Not even the cold temperatures could stop runners; some warm hot chocolate and flannel is all they needed. There was also a two-mile walk and a kids race.

"The sun's out, so that’s the best part," added Pampel.

This Flannel run is part of the seven races of the Wisconsin Chilly Willy Run Series. The runs go until March.
