'Scary to see:' 87-year-old man struck by vehicle, killed near 57th and Lincoln in West Allis

WEST ALLIS -- An 87-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and killed near 57th Street and Lincoln Avenue in West Allis early Saturday, Dec. 21, the medical examiner confirmed.

It happened just after midnight, and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of first responders.

The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.

Police said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in this case.

"The car was literally stopped in the middle of traffic, hazards on," said Samantha Treder, who witnessed the crash. "We weren't sure what was going on until we had seen the front of the vehicle."

Treder said she and a girlfriend were driving home early Saturday, headed westbound on Lincoln Avenue when they spotted a vehicle stopped in the middle of the street.

"We kept going a little bit slower, and then we see feet at the front of the car, and we ended up just seeing the body laying there," said Treder.

It wasn't immediately clear which direction the pedestrian was heading, or where he was in the street when he was struck. Later Saturday morning, there were few signs, if any, that anything happened.

"That was something scary to see," said Treder.

Treder said the early-morning incident proved to be a wakeup call and asked that everyone be more aware of their surroundings.

"You have to be cautious of everything around you, regardless if it's pedestrians, vehicles, everything," said Treder.

An investigation was ongoing.
