Senator Alberta Darling: Senate won't go along with Gov. Walker's request for $200M more for roads
MADISON — The Republican co-chair of the Legislature's powerful budget committee says the Senate won't go along with Governor Scott Walker's request to approve $200 million of more borrowing this year to pay for roads.
Sen. Alberta Darling said Tuesday, October 20th that additional borrowing is not sustainable and will only take money away from other spending needs, like public schools and Medicaid.
Walker's administration on Monday sent a letter to lawmakers asking for approval of the bonding. Walker released the letter Tuesday before he was to hold a news conference in Neenah to discuss the proposal.
Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb says in the letter to lawmakers that spending the money now would prevent more costly repairs later.
But Darling says the Legislature needs to find a different solution.
