Sheriff tells Union Grove residents to "stay indoors:" Manhunt underway for abduction suspect

UNION GROVE (WITI) -- An abduction, gunfire and fear in Union Grove as police search for a suspect who seemingly disappeared into the woods. It all started on Sunday afternoon, March 22nd. Gunfire in the parking lot of a Piggly Wiggly store following an apparently abduction left many shaken. And on Sunday night, Sheriff's officials were encouraging folks to stay inside their homes.

UPDATE MONDAY MORNING: The following Union Grove area schools are closed are closed Monday, March 23rd for safety reasons related to this manhunt:

Racine County Sheriff's officials took to Facebook on Sunday to alert Union Grove residents about a tactical situation. This, as a massive manhunt for an armed suspect began.

Racine County Sheriff's officials posted the following message on Facebook:

    Stan Sillas

Law enforcement officials have vowed that they won't go home until the suspect in this case is apprehended. They are looking for a man named "Stan Sillas." Police say the 20-year-old man has a criminal history, but they won't elaborate on prior charges. He is to be considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators say Sillas abducted a woman at gunpoint on Sunday afternoon at the Racine Neurological Center near Waterford.

Police got a description of the car Sillas was driving, and soon after, it was reported in the parking lot of the Union Grove Piggly Wiggly store.

Sillas was approached by Racine County Sheriff's deputies and allegedly opened fire. At least two shots were fired -- one into a parked squad car with a deputy inside. That deputy returned fire, but it's unclear whether Sillas was hit.

Sillas left the woman at the Piggly Wiggly store and ran away.

    Union Grove Piggly Wiggly

A massive manhunt is underway to find Sillas and take him into custody. This, as Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling issued a warning to residents late Sunday:

"We want them to stay indoors -- especially those who reside in Union Grove. Stay indoors. Lock your house up. If you see something, call 911 immediately. Mr. Sillas has been described as approximately 5'11", 180 pounds, slim build. He is a male, black. He is wearing dark clothing -- believed to be a dark hooded-type sweatshirt. We have several reports of him possibly being in and out of backyards," Sheriff Schmaling said.

Piggly Wiggly employee Todd Osborne was collecting carts in the parking lot when he saw squad cars zoom toward the store.

"I heard two shots. I saw the cops show up and he drew his gun and looked in cars," Osborne said.

Osborne says shots were fired into parked vehicles.

"I seen a black male with a silver gun," Osborne said.

Osborne says the suspect was with a woman.

"She was crying and she didn't know what was going on either," Osborne said.

Rumors started to swirl inside the store once the woman left with police. Osborne says he heard she might have been abducted.

"That`s what we heard.  She was kidnapped from a rehab place.  I don`t know for sure," Osborne said.

The Piggly Wiggly store was locked down for two hours as police searched for the suspect.

"I was in shock. I started shaking. Everybody was confused.  Nobody knew what was going on," Osborne said.

We're told the woman who was abducted is okay. The deputy who was fired at is also said to be okay.

Again -- anyone with information as to Sillas' whereabouts is asked to dial 911.
