Pursuit, crash into Milwaukee library construction site

An SUV being chased by deputies from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) collided with a second vehicle at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Locust in Milwaukee on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 7. The crash was caught on surveillance from a nearby business.

An MCSO squad was monitoring a home in the area of 2nd and Lloyd, attempting to locate a 36-year-old man wanted for burglary, as well as fleeing and eluding.

When the man exited the home shortly after 2:30 p.m., he entered an SUV. MCSO detectives, who had been observing the home, attempted to pull the man over. The man did stop briefly, officials said, but he almost immediately fled the traffic stop. Detectives pursued his vehicle.

After approximately one mile and less than five minutes, at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and W. Locust Street, the suspect’s vehicle ran through a red light, struck another vehicle driven by a 19-year-old man, and careened into the library construction site.

"I heard a big bang, I come running out and I see the awning there dropped, and I’m like what’s going on?" Bruno's Floral Shop owner Trudy Kralj said. "We had sheriffs, we had FBI, all undercover things that we said there had to be something big enough to have that many agencies."

No deputies were hurt.

The 19-year-old in the car was not hurt, but his vehicle suffered serious damage. The suspect was not hurt. A 23-year-old construction worker inside the building site reported leg pain. He was examined at the scene by the Milwaukee Fire Department and cleared.

"I think the damage looks worse than it is," Milwaukee Public Library construction project manager Yves LaPierre said. "That whole area has not been fully constructed. There is going to be a large concrete bench there that would have actually stopped the car from doing the damage you see."
