Sheriff's officials on hand as thousands take to Bradford Beach
MILWAUKEE -- The arrival of Memorial Day Weekend and summer-like temperatures in the area brought the unofficial start of summer for many, and the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office was ready as thousands made their way to the beach this weekend. Patrols of all kinds will work through the summer to keep the lakefront safe.
Beach goers took to Bradford Beach on Sunday, May 27th, playing volleyball, football and bags - but beers were also part of the equation for a nice day on the beach, and sheriff's deputies worked to make sure everyone was following the rules.
Deputies on foot patrolled the beach, looking for things like underage drinking.
"The foot patrols are around to see if anybody needs anything, and also to take care of any situations that may warrant - whether it be talking to individuals, or citing individuals or arresting them," Sheriff's Captain Catherine Trimboli said.
Captain Trimboli says the heavy sheriff's deputy presence on the lakefront is something people will see all summer long.
About 50 deputies on foot, on motorcycles and in squad cars monitor the lakefront, including traffic on Lincoln Memorial Drive, and pedestrian activity along the sidewalk.
"We're making sure we're keeping an eye on it - finger on the pulse. Presence is everything. We want to make sure everybody has a good time," Captain Trimboli said.
But to do that, they want people to have fun, but in a responsible and safe manor.
""If you're going to come down, enjoy yourself and abide by the rules," Trimboli said. "This is a no nonsense zone as the Sherrif says. And we're trying to be here to make sure everybody has a safe and enjoyable weekend."
