Shooting outside Brown Deer Walmart

Brown Deer police arrested a suspect after shots were fired in a Walmart parking lot on Friday, March 1. It started with a fight.

Brown Deer police arrested a suspect after shots were fired in a Walmart parking lot on Friday, March 1.

It happened around 3:15 p.m. at the store near 64th and Brown Deer. Police said they were first called for a fight – but learned shots were fired in the parking lot while officers were on the way.

"I just went to the floor, I got down. It was very scary, people were running and screaming, it’s scary," said shopper Amanda Hedrick.

Upon arrival at the scene, witnesses told police that the shooter ran off. Officers then found and arrested the suspect in a residential neighborhood just north of the store. 

Police said the people involved in the fight also left the scene. Authorities said the bullets struck their car, and they are still trying to find those people and the vehicle.

There is no outstanding threat to the public, and no injuries were reported. Police believe all the people involved in the fight and shooting knew one another. 

Crime scene tape was taken down around 4 p.m. and the store reopened to customers shortly before 6 p.m.
