Sikh Temple shooting victim upgraded from serious to satisfactory

WAUWATOSA -- Froedtert Hospital officials Friday, August 10th announced the condition of one of three individuals critically wounded in the Oak Creek Sikh Temple shooting has been upgraded. Santokh Singh's condition was upgraded Friday to "satisfactory."

Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy is in "satisfactory condition." Murphy was among the first to the scene, and was reportedly ambushed by the shooter -- Wade Michael Page -- while providing aid to a victim in the temple's parking lot. Lt. Murphy was shot eight or nine times. He was initially in Froedtert's ICU in critical condition, and underwent surgeries.

Lt. Murphy's family released a statement Friday, August 10th -- according to a news release issued by Froedtert officials. The statement said: "We want to express our heartfelt thanks to the Oak Creek police department and all of the other police and emergency responders who came to the scene last Sunday. We will never forget their heroic actions and quick thinking that saved so many lives on that terrible day.  We also want to thank the doctors, nurses and the entire staff at Froedtert Hospital for the exceptional care Brian has received. He has made remarkable progress despite his serious injuries."

The statement went on to say -- "We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and compassion we have received from so many people during this difficult time for our family, and especially thank the Sikh community for including us in their prayers. As we continue to support Brian and hope for his recovery, we remember the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy. They, and the entire Sikh community, are in our thoughts and prayers."

50-year-old Santokh Sing suffered a single gunshot wound that penetrated his chest, diaphragm, stomach and liver. All of his injuries were repaired in two surgeries and he is recovering well.

Singh's family also released a statement via Froedtert Friday. That statement came from Singh's nephew, Gurjeet Singh and said: "As we remain at the bedside of my uncle Santokh Singh, we are encouraged by the progress he is making in his recovery.  We are profoundly touched by the outpouring of support from people across the world. We are thankful to law enforcement and emergency responders at the scene and extend gratitude to the caregivers at Froedtert Hospital. We are pleased to know that Lieutenant Murphy is progressing so well in his recovery and pray for the continued healing of Punjab Singh. Today, we pause to remember and honor those who lost their lives in this tragedy, and we pray that our world becomes a more peaceful place."

According to Froedtert Hospital's website, 65-year-old Punjab Singh suffered a single gunshot wound to the face that caused facial fractures and damage to his right carotid and vertebral artery. There is evidence he also may have subsequently suffered a stroke. He requires mechanical support to breathe and remains in "critical" condition.
